CLEARWATER, Florida (AP). The prosthetic-tailed dolphin that starred in Tale of the Dolphins may be fighting a gastrointestinal infection, officials said.
The Clearwater Saltwater Aquarium reported in a news release on Sunday that on November 1, staff noticed that Winter was not eating and was behaving abnormally. An initial blood test showed a possible infection.
A 16-year-old dolphin care team is monitoring the 16-year-old dolphin around the clock, according to a press release. It is located in the central pool of the aquarium, which has no public underwater observations. Visitors to the aquarium can see Winter from above on the third-floor terrace.
“Her story of survival has inspired millions of people around the world, and she continues to demonstrate a strong, determined and fighting spirit,” the press release said. “Our dedicated staff will continue to monitor her closely during this healing process and provide her with the highest quality services.”
Winter was only two months old when her tail became entangled in a crab trap near Cape Canaveral on Florida’s Atlantic coast. The 2011 Dolphin Tale tells the story of Winter’s recovery. and her journey with a prosthetic tail. Three years later, Dolphins Tale 2 also stars Hope, another rescued dolphin that is being looked after by the Clearwater Aquarium.
Aquarium officials said no other animals or marine life at the facility showed signs of illness.
