The latest study by Rutgers University, USA is the first research done on its effects in the world.

The study said a nuclear weapon explosion would cause large fires and spread soot in the atmosphere, preventing sunlight from reaching the surface and limiting the production of food that could cause death.
“Most people will starve. The data tells us one thing. We have to stop nuclear war from happening,” Lily Xia, a climate scientist at Rutgers University who led the research, told Nature.com.
The study outlines the scenarios that could happen if the US and Russia engaged in a full-scale nuclear war for a week.
“War between the US, its allies, and Russia, which has more than 90 percent of global nuclear weapons, could produce more than 150 teragrams of soot and a nuclear winter,” the study said.
The teragram is a unit of measurement equal to 1 trillion grams, while research models suggest that emissions of soot into the atmosphere of more than 5 teragrams will result in severe food shortages in almost all countries.
The same study said, “The soot will spread globally and cover the upper part of Earth’s atmosphere. Therefore, our results are relevant, no matter which country is at war.”
In the scenario of a war between the US and Russia, the average global caloric output from crops would drop by about 90 percent within four years of the war. In addition, nuclear war would also reduce the global fish supply.
