Dozens of Cubans have their probation revoked as crime surges in Havana

Cuban authorities revoked the probation of dozens of people previously sentenced to prison in response to a spike in crime in the city.

The Mauro Torres 2.0 Facebook page linked to the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) reported that prisoners controlled by the execution judge were re-arrested after their conduct was evaluated by the police and the court.

“This type of meeting has been held in the municipalities of Centro Habana, Cerro, Marianao, Habana del Este and San Miguel del Padrón, although it is not ruled out that it could take place in other places,” he said.

An alleged witness identified as Maikel Hidalgo Cruz explained that the police, as a prophylaxis measure, pointed out those who violated the law and detained them for misconduct and sentenced others ; and detains those who do not obey the law or who have committed other crimes.

“These people are being prosecuted for various crimes and the best part is that anyone who doesn’t go to jail gets a good lesson in what can happen to them,” he said.

Earlier this month, another thief linked to more than 20 robberies in the municipalities of Regla, Guanabacoa and San Miguel del Padrón was arrested in Havana.

The perpetrator, identified as Alexis Pupo and a resident of San Miguel del Padron, declared more than 20 robberies and on May 8 he was arrested for robbery with violence.

Likewise, officials in Holguin province acknowledged that thefts have increased in recent months so much that the population has reason to be concerned.

The Ministry of the Interior (MINUT) released a note in which it noted several violent robberies with the use of edged weapons in the main municipality, in which criminals took away cell phones, electric motors, bicycles, purses and other items from the victims . ,

The incidents mostly occurred at night and early morning, although some occurred during the day. There are 57 thieves so far, most of whom are youths, some between the ages of 17 and 21.

One of those apprehended criminals is Alexi Santiago Calderón Patterson, who is accused of several attacks in Holguin, and who used a knife to intimidate his victims.

After he was arrested, several Cubans shared his photo on the Internet to report if there were more victims.
