SANTO DOMINGO. – After closing the border with Haiti, the government of the Dominican Republic will purchase the products that were intended for export to the neighboring country, reported the Minister of the Presidency, Joel Santos Echavarría.
He said that they are eggs, chickens, chili peppers, eggplants, beans and onions, which are used in the government’s social plans through the economic kitchens, the National Student Welfare Institute (INABIE), the presidential social plan and the US National Price Stabilization Institute (INESPRE).
Santos Echavarría announced the measure during a meeting at the National Palace with the directors of INESPRE, Iván Hernández Guzmán; by INABIE, Víctor Castro; of Economic Kitchens, Edgar Augusto Feliz Méndez, and the Vice Ministers of Agriculture, Eladio Ramírez and of Industry, Trade and MSMEs, Ramón Pérez Fermín.
“The government will purchase the perishable products traded with Haiti as part of a strategy to support local production. “The government will carry out an investigation at the remaining border points where commercial exchanges between Dominican producers and traders and those from the neighboring country take place,” he stressed.
Next, he added: “Producers can rest assured that the government will support them in this situation, since the action taken by the President is a matter of security and defense of national sovereignty.”
He pointed out that INESPRE and the Presidency’s Social Plan will mobilize towards the border provinces, with the aim of increasing their support to the residents and producers of this region of the country.
