FORBES. – In a consultation conducted by Mitofsky, Mexicans said they were willing to pay up to 5% more for a product in recycled packaging.
Having products in organic packaging is initially more expensive for the consumer, but a large proportion of Mexicans say they are willing to pay this premium.
This emerges from a survey by the Mitofsky polling institute, which showed this Thursday that 67.6% of Mexicans, almost three quarters of the population, would be willing to pay more for a product with sustainable packaging.
The increase that those committed to recycling and environmental protection would achieve would in most cases be between 3% and 5%, according to the results of the survey carried out on behalf of the multinational Procter & Gamble (P&G). the packaging solutions manufacturer ALPLA and the environmental group Vida Circular.
When asked about the increase in product prices that would be necessary for the benefit of the environment, Sabo Tercero, Vida Circular employee, explained that all innovations are fundamentally expensive.
“All input innovations have always been expensive, on the first flights only three people in the world could fly; In the beginning, when cell phones first appeared, not all of us had one. And today we all fly and we all have cell phones,” he said during the presentation of the survey on plastic recycling among Mexicans.
Aldo Vergara, director of public affairs at Procter & Gamble, in turn omitted the price increase that the products of the company he represents would suffer if they began to be packaged in recycled containers, although he explained that the increases would thus be reduced would be the best waste disposal in the population.
“When material is available, it becomes easier to process it, have a standard value in the market, and it becomes easier to use recycled material than fossil material.”
Regarding this correct waste disposal, Metropolitan Autonomous University researcher Alethia Vázquez explained at the conference the urgency of creating virtuous circles to mitigate the crisis of excess plastic waste that the country is suffering from.
The results of the survey “Plastic Recycling among Mexicans” also show that 72% of the population was willing to deposit plastic containers in nearby recycling centers, which would increase recycling rates and make products in ecological packaging more accessible.
