A few months ago, a new accident shaped the life of a cyclist. He is Sergio Román Martín, who collided with a car and suffered several fractures that left him in a wheelchair. The Caja Rural man didn’t want to miss the start of the 20th stage of the Vuelta a España and had a special meeting there with Egan Bernal.
The Spanish team showed a photo on social networks in which the Colombian talks to Martín about his current state of health; For Bernal it is not just any case, because in 2022 he experienced it first hand.
It is not the first time that Egan has been in contact with this 26-year-old driver, as a few weeks ago it was revealed that he had dedicated an emotional message to him supporting him in the difficult situation in which he finds himself and sends strength.

On the fateful March 7, a slip, perhaps a car with a faulty signaling system or simply a cruel quirk of fate, drastically changed the life of a 26-year-old young man as he returned to Galapagar after an intensive training sessions. Sergio Román Martín, whose surname evokes the world of bullfighting but in reality is a professional cyclist who was part of the Caja Rural team, was at the peak of his career. He competed in the Vuelta a España in 2021 and had already completed 19 days of competition in a single month in 2023. In addition, I had Itzulia ahead of me and numerous dreams to fulfill in the world of cycling. However, this accident changed his entire perspective.
In this fateful event, he suffered a fracture of two vertebrae and damaged his spinal cord. He had to undergo emergency surgery at the 12 de Octubre Hospital after being transported by helicopter. After 16 days in Toledo, his life took a new direction. Sergio no longer feels or has control over the lower part of his body below the spinal cord. Despite the uncertainty about his future recovery, he bravely accepts reality. He is aware that there may be a possibility for recovery in the future, but also realizes that this answer will only come to light with time. Despite everything, he shows no trace of self-pity in his words.
