Eight people from the New York Yankees organization tested positive, although they were vaccinated. Here’s what to know.

The team announced Thursday that Gleyber Torres, the two-time All-Star shortstop of the Yankees, has become the eighth person involved with the Yankees organization to test the coronavirus positively. But what drew many people outside the baseball world’s attention is that Torres, three coaches and four support staff have all been completely vaccinated.

The Yankees have called all eight cases “breakthrough-positive.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a breakthrough case occurs when a person who has been fully vaccinated contracted the virus. It is said that a small number of such cases can be expected despite the effectiveness of vaccines, because none of the vaccines can prevent disease in 100 percent of the cases.

It is not immediately clear how this happened.

The Yankees enjoy relaxed health and safety protocols under rules negotiated by MLB and the players’ union to reach a threshold at which 85 percent of the team’s players and key personnel are fully vaccinated.

Asked about a possible thread among the positive cases, Cashman pointed to a long delay in the rain before a game Saturday at Yankee Stadium, saying players had a much larger clubhouse space indoors to play in. to distribute compared to what the coaches and the support staff had. A day later, the team flies to Tampa.

Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, the CDC’s director, said Thursday that the agency wants to learn more about the outbreak of the Yankees. She pointed out that six of the seven cases of Yankees were asymptomatic as of Wednesday, indicating that the vaccine was indeed effective.
