England reaches the grand final of the World Cup, where they face the Spanish national team.
The English national team, reigning European champions, became the second finalist of the 2023 World Cup after a thrilling duel against Australia that ended 1-3 in favor of the Lionesses.
A balanced first half saw the Lionesses gain a lead over Australia and move closer to the 2023 World Cup grand final. England took possession of the ball and tried to do damage in front of Arnold’s goal, but failed. In the 36th minute, their attempts bore fruit.
The first danger came from Georgia Stanway with a shot in front of the hosts’ goal, but Mackenzie Arnold was very alert and was able to save the ball. Minutes later, Russo appeared on the edge of the penalty area with a shot at the near post that went very close to the Australian goal.
In the 36th minute, Ella Toone scored the goal at the Accor Stadium to give England the lead. The Manchester United player found the ball in the penalty area after Hemp passed a pass from Russo and opened the scoring with a powerful shot.
Australia tried every means possible to turn the situation around and thanks to Sam Kerr they had a slight hope of staying alive in the game. In the 63rd minute of the game and despite England continuing to control the ball, the Matildas star equalized with a mid-range shot.
But the Lionesses showed their strength again. In the 71st minute, it was Lauren Hemp who took advantage of a mistake by the Australian defenders and shot the ball at the far post, a shot that Arnold couldn’t reach.
Once again with great play in the 86th minute, Hemp left the ball to Alessia Russo, who scored with a cross shot in front of the Australian goal to condemn the hosts and secure their place in the 2023 World Cup final.
Spain and England will face each other at the Accor Stadium next Sunday, August 20, to determine the new world champions.
