This Friday the Mexico City Congress approved the use of a neutral uniform that will give students the freedom to choose whether they want to wear pants or a skirt.
In conjunction with initiatives approved by Congress, reforms will be made to local education legislation.
It should be remembered that the proposal on the use of these uniforms was made last March by the head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, although it was only assumed that girls could choose whether they preferred to wear skirts or pants to attend classes. Whether or not, however, during the debate between the deputies it was decided that children also have the right to make this choice.
“Every girl, boy and adolescent has the right to the free development of his personality. In schools, both public and private, girls will be allowed to wear neutral uniforms. Girls and boys will be able to freely choose whether they want to wear pants or skirts to attend classes.
Similarly, schools should avoid enacting rules that restrict the rights of students to be motivated by their physical appearance, details the amendments approved by legislators.
Among other issues that were approved was the proposal for the Rosario Castellanos Institute to become a university.
In addition, the law establishes the La Escuela es Nuestra program, which will provide annual universal support to all public basic education schools so that, under the organization of parents, in coordination with educational authorities, they manage resources for the maintenance of facilities.
