For the past few weeks, I’ve been meeting powerful women in Madison — from politicians to business owners, health care workers and academics — and we all commented on how tough the past 19 months have been for moms, daughters, sisters. and female companions.

During the quarantine we were doing our full-time, outdoor work, as well: fighting the growing craze about our family’s health, keeping the fridge and cabinets stocked with food, cooking, making sure there were little rodents in the house. Not breeding and insects and, in some cases, being a full-time teacher to young children.

The list really goes on and on. Every working woman I’ve spoken to over the past three weeks was talking about how some people got bored during the COVID quarantine and the subsequent shutdown. Others brag about learning a new craft, getting in shape, or catching up on their favorite TV show.

But even between professional and working women with no children, it has exposed women’s inequalities in caring for family members, taking care of themselves when sick, and just moving on.

And while the disparities in home work and home-life labor are well documented, things are no better in the office.

Women do not get their due in the workplace. And even putting aside the issue of pay inequality, a lot of women and men don’t even notice how unfair life is if you’re born female because it’s so deeply ingrained in our social consciousness. However, the hard numbers have an eye-opening effect.
