EU imposes sanctions on Russian banks, officials and industry

BRUSSELS ( Associated Press) — The European Union proposed Wednesday a travel ban and asset freeze on about 200 Russian civil servants and military officers as part of a new round of sanctions to pressure Moscow over the war in Ukraine.

The European Commission, the executive body of the European Union, tabled proposals for debate by the 27 member states. Proposals are generally required to be vetted for ratification by all countries.

The recommended sanctions would apply to ministers, legislators, regional governors and political parties.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement: “The list includes key figures in brutal and deliberate Russian missile attacks on civilians, the kidnapping and bringing of Ukrainian children to Russia, and the theft of Ukrainian agricultural products.” ,

The new series of sanctions also target the Russian defense industry and more Russian banks, and to introduce export controls and bans on chemicals, nerve agents, electronics and technical components that could be used by the military.

This would include “a complete ban on Russian Regional Development Bank transactions to cripple Putin’s ATMs,” von der Leyen said.

The EU is also expected to block Russia’s access to UAVs.

“We propose to ban the direct export of drone engines to third countries, such as Russia and Iran, which may supply drones to Russia,” the European official said.

In addition, the European Commission has recommended that member states take action against the energy and mining sectors, with restrictions on new investment in mining, and the shutdown of Russian TV stations in Europe.

“After food and starvation, Putin has vowed to use winter as a weapon. He wants to disrupt electricity, heating and water supplies for millions of citizens in Ukraine,” the European Union’s Office of Foreign Affairs Chief Josep Borrell tweeted. “We respond with a ninth sanctions package to those waging this brutal war.”
