Everton fire Lampard from club in relegation zone

Everton sacked manager Frank Lampard on Monday, leaving the Premier League side struggling to avoid relegation and battling the disapproval of its fans by the club’s board.

Lampard, a former England and Chelsea player, has had barely a year on one of the most volatile benches in English football. Everton will have their eighth permanent manager since Farhad Moshiri took over the club in 2016.

Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by West Ham proved to be Lampard’s last game in charge. The setback left the team in last place in the English league after 28 out of 38 matches of the season. They have the same number of points as bottom team Southampton.

Lampard, 44, was signed last January and rescued Everton in the final week of the season, securing their place in the top flight for 69th season.

But that could not prevent the team from battling in the relegation battle once again. Everton have barely three wins – the fewest of any club in the league this season – and only 15 goals.

“His commitment and dedication to Frank and the team was exemplary during his time at the club,” Everton said in a statement released on Monday amid speculation about the manager’s imminent departure. “But the recent results and the current situation in the league forced this decision.”

“We wish Frank and his coaching staff the best of luck in their future endeavours,” he added.

Everton indicated that the process of recruiting Lampard’s successor. During this time the club’s former defenders Paul Tait and Leighton Baines will lead the training.

Fans are increasingly displeased with the club’s present. Prior to a home game against Southampton on 14 January, Everton reported that members of its board of directors had been ordered not to visit Goodison Park, as the club itself posed a “real and credible threat to their safety”. .
