Experts point out that combination exercises are highly effective for weight loss.

The research, in which a UCSC academic participated, subjected overweight and obese people to different types of exercise to analyze changes in body composition with long-term consequences.

Academic researcher, Dr Eliane Aparecida de Castro, took part in a study which followed overweight and obese adults for three years to compare the effects of different types of physical activity combined with exercise or diet . UCSC School of Education.

The scientific article “Changes in body composition following a weight loss intervention: a 3-year follow-up study”, analyzed the study subjects’ body composition as measured with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) , a technique currently most commonly used for the study of body composition, allows for accurate determination of the amount of fat, muscle and bone mass of a person.

The study demonstrated effectiveness in reducing fat mass in subjects who underwent a combination of strength training and cardiovascular training.

“Three years after the end of the intervention, the participants’ percentage of fat mass returned to values ​​similar to those observed at the beginning of the program in free-living conditions, except for the group of combined training, for the group where the subjects did strength training. and did cardiovascular. In addition, muscle mass at the end of the intervention was also maintained with this type of training – so far only raised for specific strength training-“, explained the UCSC researcher.

The idea to address this issue arose from a need to test whether certain exercises are effective in maintaining weight. Regarding this, Dr. Eliane Aparecida de Castro said that “the literature demonstrates the effectiveness of various exercise, physical activity, and diet programs for weight loss. However, most individuals, after a few months or years, regain the lost weight and, in many cases, weigh more than they did prior to the weight loss procedures. Thus, it is important to investigate whether specific exercises can help maintain weight after a weight loss program.”


This study is part of the Nutrition and Physical Activity for Obesity Treatment Project Program (PRONAF), which consists of three phases that were developed between 2009 and December 2011. It is a clinical trial aimed at demonstrating which physical activity treatment and nutrition was more appropriate for cases of overweight and obesity – with a fitness center as the setting – and health institutions with this pathology. With the Research Group Laboratory of Effort Physiology as coordinator of the Science of Physical Activity and Sports (INEF) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the Hospital Universitario de la Paz, especially its IDIPAZ research service, and the Institut de Investigación Marques de Valdecilla (IFIMAV ) has been part of this project, in collaboration with the University of Cantabria, which analyzed more than 2500 variables per participant. After six months of intervention, 180 overweight and obese subjects completed the project, of whom 98 (41%) participated in trials 3 years later (2012–2013).

Existing studies comparing different types of exercise-based interventions have not shown a consistent effect of training in maintaining a more healthy body composition over the long term.

“As such, the results observed in the current investigation contribute to the expansion of understanding in this area. The combined strength and endurance group was the group that achieved the best change in body composition after the intervention and at 3 years,” said the researcher. .

It is expected that the findings of the study may have great clinical relevance, as they suggest that physical exercise should always be included in weight loss programs, and especially joint exercise.
