Eyeing Variant, France tightens stricter limits for UK tourists

PARIS – France could impose stricter coronavirus restrictions on British visitors when tourism reopens this summer, to prevent the spread of a virus variant first detected in India and cause concern in Britain, authorities said on Sunday.

The possibility of stricter restrictions for British tourists was raised on Sunday by Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

The minister suggested that Britain could be placed in its own health category, between the strictest measures France imposes on visitors from India and 15 other countries, and more relaxed requirements for visitors from the European Union and other countries.

Without giving details, Le Drian said that ‘health measures that are a bit stronger’ could be applied to British tourists.

The minister indicated that the government in Paris is watching how the situation develops before making a decision.

“We hope the variant can be controlled in a country that has experienced real failures during the pandemic,” he said.

‘However, the arrival of the Indian variant and the increase in cases of Indian variant in the UK poses a problem, and therefore we are vigilant about this (and) in contact with the British authorities,’ he added.

‘It will not be the red treatment if we have to do it. It will be an interim treatment, ‘the minister said. “But it is not excluded – it comes to mind because of British tourists – that we have a bit stronger health measures.”

As of Sunday, Germany has already started requiring people arriving from the UK to go into quarantine for 14 days. The decision announced last Friday was in response to the proliferation of the Indian variant in Britain.

Under the stricter rules, airlines and others will also be able to transport only German citizens and residents of Britain.
