Fatal accident: 3 young teens were running away from traffic stop in Ukiya, says CHP

A 14-year-old girl died in the early hours of Saturday when the car she was traveling in crashed while running from police in Ukia.

The California Highway Patrol said the injured were a 15-year-old driver and a 13-year-old passenger.

The police chase began around 1:35 am when officers in a patrol vehicle reportedly saw a 2017 Volkswagen Beetle running a red light on the main street of State Street, Ukia. When they tried to pull over the driver, he sped away.

Police followed the car on southbound Highway 101, but lost sight as it reached speeds of 100 mph.

They then came upon a car wreck at the highway interchange on Rivino Ranch Road. The driver had apparently run towards the ramp while trying to re-enter the highway after getting off 101 there. The car overturned after hitting a tree.

The CHP said the 14-year-old Potter Valley resident, who was in the front seat, was pronounced dead on the spot. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver, a Redwood Valley resident, was taken to a Bay Area hospital. A Ukiah girl sitting in the back seat was taken to Ukiah Hospital.
