Things to watch during Week 5 of play in the Big Ten Conference:
game of the week
No. 5 Iowa in Maryland, Friday
With both the teams being unbeaten, the scope of this game has increased. Iowa has relied on one of the better strongholds in the country, but is still waiting for its guilt to come to the fore. The Hawkeyes are the last in the Big Ten in total offense and played like it in a harder-than-expected victory over Colorado State. Maryland’s Towel Tagovailoa has thrown for 10 touchdowns against an interception and is one of the national leaders with 335 yards per game. Penalties have been an issue for Terrapins, and they must be kept to a minimum against an opponent to capitalize on mistakes.
Michigan Running Game vs Wisconsin Run Defense. The Wolverines lead the nation in a race, with Badger being the first to take part in the defense. Michigan made big totals in its first three games but only 112 yards on the field against Rutgers last week. Wisconsin, which last week restricted Notre Dame to a run of 3 yards, restricted Michigan to 47 in an easy win last year.
Penn State QB Sean Clifford passed for 401 yards and four touchdowns, both career highs, against Villanova last week. He is the first Penn State passer to score these points in a single game. His 71.7% completion percentage is the highest through four games by a Nittany Lions quarterback since 2000. Clifford leads the Big Ten in attempts per pass (9.65), third in passing yards per game (289.5) and fourth in total offenses per game. (309.2).
According to the FanDuel Sportsbook, the 10 1/2-point road for Northwestern Nebraska is the underdog. It doesn’t appear to be one of Pat Fitzgerald’s better Northwestern teams, but the Wildcats always play Nebraska hard. Eight of the last 10 meetings have been decided by one point, and the Wildcats have won three out of five at Lincoln.
Rutgers LB Olakunle Fatukasi returned to school instead to announce the NFL draft and once again anchored his team’s defense. He will be front and center against Ohio State. He has 3.5 sacks and leads the Scarlet Knights with 39 tackles in four games. The Buckeyes have rushed for a combined 560 yards and eight touchdowns over the past two weeks.
