FedEx Field in Maryland dropped as 2026 World Cup site

WASHINGTON ( Associated Press) — FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, dropped out of bidding Thursday to host games at the 2026 World Cup, and the Washington field merged its campaign with Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium.

The joint bid will feature a fan festival on the National Mall in the District of Columbia.

FedEx Field, which opened in 1997, was one of the older facilities initially bidding in 2017. It hosted matches during the 1999 Women’s World Cup. DC’s RFK Stadium was the site of matches during the 1994 Men’s World Cup and has been slated for demolition.

Seventeen American stadiums in 16 arenas are bidding for the World Cup, both Sophie Stadium in Inglewood in the Los Angeles area and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, site of the 1994 World Cup final.

Three cities each in Canada and Mexico are bidding. The bidding plan envisioned a total of 16 sites for the tournament, and FIFA targeted mid-May to announce the site selection.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first with 48 countries and the first with three co-hosts. FIFA selected Bid as the joint host in June 2018.

Sixty games are to be played in the US, including all games from the quarter finals to the present day. Canada and Mexico are to host 10 games each.
