FEMA sends aid after New York snow storm dumps 77 inches on Buffalo

NEW YORK — Federal aid is pouring in to ramp up cleanup efforts in parts of western and northern New York as up to 6 feet of snow fell on the Buffalo area during a one-day siege that appears to be finally over. Was.

The emergency declaration authorizes the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief in the 11 counties most affected by the lake effect blizzard on Friday and Saturday.

The National Weather Service recorded 77 inches on Saturday at Orchard Park, home of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, and 72 inches at Natural Bridge near Watertown on the eastern end of Lake Ontario.

More snow fell in some areas on Sunday night, but stopped by Monday morning.

“At last we are dry,” said Weather Service meteorologist Liz Jarkowski.

Driving restrictions in most storm-hit areas were lifted Monday morning, but schools remained closed in Buffalo and surrounding cities. The blizzard was at least the worst in New York state since November 2014, when some communities south of Buffalo saw 7 feet of snow over the course of three days.

Jarkowski said snowfall totals for this storm as of Monday are still being tabulated.
