First-ever female soldier graduates from U.S. Army sniper course

A Montana Army National Guard soldier graduated from the US Army sniper course, becoming the first woman in history to do so.

The soldier, whose identity has not been disclosed, took a mentally and physically grueling seven-week course on November 5, the army said in a press release.

“We are extremely proud of this soldier’s achievement and understand that this is an important milestone not only for Montana, but for the entire National Guard and the army,” said Major General J. Peter Hroneck, Adjutant General of Montana. “This soldier has had to volunteer to serve this goal several times, which is a demonstration of her dedication and dedication to the cause.”

The woman enlisted in the Montana Army National Guard last December and qualified as an experienced marksman while training for Infantry One Station in Fort Benning, Georgia.

She was recommended for sniper training by training and command personnel during the 22-week course at Fort Benning.

The course, like the sniper position itself, requires incredible fortitude. First, candidates must be able to remain perfectly still in uncomfortable conditions for hours – hell with mosquitoes, inclement weather, heat, dirt, and sweat.

Candidates are also highly isolated in this area, which creates their own set of challenges, both mental and physical.

“Instead of the usual 35-pound backpack, the sniper can carry up to 110 pounds on his back and will have to walk many miles or even crawl to complete the mission,” said the staff sergeant. Brian Moran reported to the U.S. Army News Service on the 2017 TV series, which documented the harsh conditions of a sniper school. “Since snipers work in small groups, if equipment is needed, this group should have it.”

Since the ban on women in hostilities was lifted in 2015, women have consistently graduated from some of the toughest military schools. In August of that year, two female officers graduated from the Army’s Elite Ranger School. And in 2020, the army saw the release of its first women’s green beret.
