GAINESVILLE, Fla. (NWN) – Johnny Jones was welcomed into the visiting locker room at the O’Connell Center. It was a festival going on for decades.
Earlier on Monday night, Winless Texas Southern overtook No. 20 Florida 69-54 after 16 points from PJ Henry and excellent shooting performance from Jordan Carl Nichols.
Texas Southern (1-7) became the first Southwestern Athletic Conference team to beat a Southeastern Conference schedule dating to 1936 in The Associated Press poll era, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Ranked SEC teams were 51–0 against SWAC opponents.
“We were completely outplay, outcoach, out-everything,” said Florida coach Mike White.
Jones got all the awards. The former LSU coach, who led Texas Southern to the NCAA Tournament last season, drowned as he stepped into the locker room to celebrate with his team. His shirt and pants were still wet during the postgame interview.
“Water bottles, everything we could throw at him,” Nichols said.
Texas Southern had six straight losses against ranking opponents. The event’s last win against a top 25 team came against the then-numbers. 18 Oregon on November 26, 2018.
The Tigers were a 23 1/2-point underdog at Gainesville. It was no surprise that they were coming out of a 27-point loss at Louisiana Tech and holding on to a Florida team trying to rebound from their first setback of the season.
But the Gators (6-2), who were ranked 14th a week earlier, had no answer for Texas Southern’s talent, tenacity and athleticism.
“We just did a terrible job in every aspect,” said Florida bigoted man Colin Castleton. “Rebounding, back door cuts, loose balls. Whatever we did poorly, the coach told us to concentrate. ,
Despite 22 turnovers, The Tigers continued to beat the Florida press and were widely seen everywhere. He shot most of them 54.4% from the field and 45.5% from 3-point range. He also overtook Florida 46-23 and led the Gators 42-26 in the paint.
“At the end of the day it’s huge for the program and our school because we know how difficult it is,” Jones said. “When you have jerks like us, you have the opportunity to either separate or come together. These guys have done a tremendous job of staying the course and coming together.”
This was the Gators’ first loss in 27 matches against teams from the SWAC.
Nichols finished with 14 points on 7 shoots for 7-7. John Walker scored 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Tigers, who started the season with seven straight losses during a cross-country road trip that included stops in the state of Oregon, Washington and North Carolina.
It was a looming loss for White, who revamped his roster with four defensive-minded transfers and his best start in seven seasons. The Gators ended it last Wednesday with a loss in Oklahoma.
Florida struggled all night, shooting 38.2% from the field and hitting 5 out of 24 from 3-point range.
Brandon McKisick led the Gators with 15 points.
“We have to rediscover our roots,” McKisick said. “We are directing the offense. We have to go back to directing the defense. We have to go back to our being.”
Texas Southern: The Tigers were selected to win the SWAC and return to the NCAA Tournament. But no one expected this result, especially since he has played several road games in a row.
Florida: It’s a new low for White, who got a contract extension in the spring. The Gators have made it to each of the four NCAA tournaments and have high hopes for this rebuilding team. But this outing will surely make him angry.
Florida likely to drop out of NWN Top 25 poll After a humble domestic loss.
Florida center Jason Jeetoboh was ruled out of the game due to a coach’s decision.
Texas Southern: The University of Texas plays in the Rio Grande Valley on December 14.
Florida: Return to his home court Wednesday night against North Florida.
