Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Tuesday the appointment of five independent Maritime senators.
In Nova Scotia, Acadian lawyer Réjean Aucoin, from Chéticamp, was appointed alongside former federal MP Rodger Cuzner. In New Brunswick, Joan Kingston, John McNair and Krista Ross were nominated.
Réjean Aucoin, with over 30 years of experience as a lawyer, supports community development throughout Nova Scotia. He is the founder and outgoing president of the Association of French-speaking jurists in the province.
Rodger Cuzner, first elected to Parliament in 2000, has represented Nova Scotia in the Commons for 19 years. He also served as Consul General of Canada in Boston, United States, from 2020 to 2023.
Nurse Joan Kingston was an MP for Fredericton from 1995 to 1999. She was previously Minister of the Environment, then Minister of Labour. She is a constant advocate for nurses, community health and women’s health.
Attorney John McNair serves on the boards of many charitable and non-profit organizations in New Brunswick. Until recently, he was general counsel and general secretary of Service New Brunswick.
Businesswoman Krista Ross has worked for the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce for 20 years. He also serves on the boards of many other local and provincial non-profit organizations.
