Florida activates National Guard amid wave of immigrants

MIAMI.- Governor Ron DeSantis activated National Guard To combat the high flow of Florida and other state agencies immigrants Cubans and Haitians in Monroe County, located in the Florida Keys.

Under the executive order, the state “will deploy air assets, including Florida National Guard planes and helicopters, and strengthen Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission marine patrols to support interdiction and ensure the safety of immigrants trying to reach Florida.” “

In a press release, DeSantis said that “as negative effects of illegal immigration policies [Joe] Biden continues unabated, placing the burden of the Biden administration’s failure on local law enforcement who lack the resources to respond to the crisis.”

DeSantis said that in the first two months of the fiscal year that began on October 1, the Border Patrol (CBP) detained more than 460,000 immigrants of various nationalities, mainly from Cuba, who made their way through the Keys to southwest Florida. Tried to enter the country from

Dry Tortugas National Park is located in Florida KeysIt was temporarily closed to the public earlier this week after about 500 Cuban immigrants arrived in what was described as a “crisis” by local officials.

The measure adopted by DeSantis comes a day after the Biden administration announced a program to grant 30,000 monthly humanitarian visas to Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans in response to the high flow of migrants by sea along the southern border and in the Florida Straits.

Police repression in Cuba, as well as dire economic and survival conditions that affected Haiti as well, forced hundreds of thousands of Cubans and Haitians to cross the Straits of Florida in any type of vessel. Usually on rafts or small boats that don’t offer much protection. Hundreds are missing in the waters separating the shores.

This isn’t the first time that DeSantis has used his executive powers in an effort to address the migrant situation in the country. Last year, the Republican governor sent a group of Florida police officers to the state of Texas to provide assistance along the border.

More than 300,000 Cubans have arrived in the United States since October 2021, mainly through the southern border, in addition to the approximately 8,000 Cubans held at sea during the same period.
