Florida Gov. DeSantis Promises to Protect Parents in School Board Meetings Against DOJ

Following the Justice Department’s announcement on Monday that it would instruct the FBI to mobilize against parents who allegedly threatened teachers and school board members, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis promised to oppose the move. State will defend parents amid GOP protests.

“Attorney General Garland is weaponizing the DOJ by using the FBI to silence the concerned parents by stalking and intimidating them,” DeSantis wrote. “Florida will protect the free speech rights of its citizens and will not allow federal agents to suppress dissent.”

The Justice Department said it would create a task force to see how the federal government could be used to prosecute any criminal conduct toward teachers or help state and local officials investigate such threats. How can assistance be given? It came as a national association of school boards asked the Biden administration to use “extraordinary measures” to stem alleged threats against school board staff, accusing parents who are teaching critical breed theory oppose and make a mask to enter them.

DeSantis’ office issued a statement Tuesday saying that while Florida law already prohibits harassment of teachers, Florida law enforcement is “fully competent to respond to crimes in Florida, and we have never suggested otherwise to the FBI.” have not heard.”

“However, dissent is not harassment. Protest is not terrorism, unless it involves rioting, looting, and assault, such as some of the left-wing protests of the summer of 2020. Again, all of those actions are crimes in Florida and have political context. They will be prosecuted regardless. Added.

According to the Justice Department, it will set up a task force to determine how to use federal resources to prosecute abusive parents as well as provide advice to states where no federal laws were broken. Is. School staff members will also be provided with training on how to report threats from parents.

During school board meetings across the United States over the past several months, there has been heated discussion by parents, teachers, and school board staff about whether children should be taught important race principles or related ideologies. The Justice Department’s announcement did not elaborate on whether the threats against teachers and staff are widespread.

This week, Republican lawmakers sharply criticized the Justice Department and Attorney General Merrick Garland’s directive, arguing that the Biden administration is attempting to quell dissent.

“Your memo is a politically motivated abuse of power and demonstrates a lack of reasoned, sound judgment … the parents have to face opposing views of the Biden administration and its socialist agenda,” wrote Representative Ken Buck (R-Colo.) in a letter to the agency.

“Parents are speaking out against the Critical Race Theory in schools. Now the Biden administration is cracking down on dissent,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) wrote on Twitter.
