Foligno’s late goal gives Wild 2-1 win over Ducks

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Marcus Foligno with 7.2 seconds left in regulation gave the Minnesota Wild a 2-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night.

After Foligno dramatically remade his roster, Wilde defeated Anthony Stollerz between his legs from the slot to take the win in their season opener, which included buying out franchise legends Ryan Sutter and Zack Parris.

“I just got lucky,” Foligno said. “It went through Stolarz’s feet, and it brought us victory”

Kevin Fiala had a power-play goal and Cam Talbot made 28 saves for Minnesota.

Jacob Silfverberg scored in the power play for a duck and Stolzer made 41 saves.

“Obviously a super tough loss,” Silfverberg said. “It’s definitely going to sting tonight. Not the way you want the game to end. I think we fought the whole game, maybe not our best game, but (Stolarz) a lot for us in the nets was growing up.

Fiala drew 1-1 at 17:35 of the second period, passing through Matt Zucarello’s crease. Zuccarello took over the top power-play unit as Joel Eriksson briefly walked back into the dressing room.

Wilde coach Dean Evans said, “If we come out of that game and we have the looks and the stuff, maybe we’ll say the same things we did last year in Games 1 and 2, where, yes, we saw but You had to score.” . “The job of the power play is to score goals. We scored a goal, we had a great look. “

Silfverberg led the Ducks 1–0 in the second goal in 17 seconds, continuing Anaheim’s early change in the power play. After scoring just three goals with Man Advantage in 28 home games during the brief 2020-21 campaign, the Ducks are 3 for 9 on power play in their first two games on home ice this season.

But Anaheim failed to take advantage of special teams opportunities in the third period, and Silfverberg said it came back to haunt them.

“We had a few chances at the end, especially in the power play with some empty nets, but we didn’t get the back of the net,” said Silfverberg. “Then it happens when there are 7 seconds left. It’s clearly nothing like what we wanted, and it’s obviously really hard right now. “

The Ducks’ only goal came after Foligno and Ducks winger Max Jones came late in the first period. Both players received fighting penalties and 10 minutes of misconduct, but Foligno was also assessed a minor for interference in order to give Anaheim a valuable man-made advantage.

“I could have had a bucket of popcorn and sat down with you guys (in the press box) and watched the second period, and came back for the third,” said Foligno, who had 17 penalty minutes and played 13:11.

gibson out

Duck G. John Gibson missed the first match of the season on Wednesday after suffering a lower body injury. Gibson was injured in a collision with Winnipeg Jets forward Andrew Copp in the third round of Anaheim’s 4–1 victory. With Gibson unavailable, Lucas Dostal was recalled from the AHL to back up Stolarz.

Good Start

Wilde F Brandon Duhaime, a fourth-round draft pick in 2016, had three shots and played 9:01 in his NHL debut. Ivson noted that Duhaime’s only slip-up came when he stepped on a puck and stumbled during his singles lap in the warmup. “He played very well and just went about his business,” said Evans.
