Forced landing for Russian aircraft due to engine failure; All safe

MOSCOW (AP) – A small Russian passenger plane made an emergency landing in Siberia on Friday after two engines failed, with the captain breaking his leg but no one else was seriously injured, authorities said.

Rescue helicopters searched the field shortly after the An-26 went missing in the Tomsk region of western Siberia. The plane landed with its gear extended but overturned. A video from the site turned it upside down.

A rescue helicopter took passengers and crew to the town of Tomsk. Captain Anatoly Pritkov, whose leg was broken, was assisted. The second pilot, Faruk Khasanov, said the plane had to make an emergency landing because both engines had stopped working.

Officials initially said the plane carried 17 people and updated the number to 19 before they could revise it.

The AN-27 is a small short-range, Soviet-designed turboprop that uses many smaller carriers across Russia and a few other countries. The plane belonged to the local CLA Airlines and was flying from the city of Kedarvo to Tomsk.

Authorities began investigating whether the airline was complying with regulations.

The flight crew did not report any problems before the plane went missing, but the plane’s emergency beacon was activated during the flight, indicating that the plane had made a forced landing or crashed.

The incident came 10 days after another Russian plane crashed while preparing to land in bad weather on Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, killing 28 people on board. An investigation into the crash of that An-26 aircraft is underway.
