Former Brazil player Richardson says he is bisexual

SAO PAULO ( Associated Press) — Richardson, a former Brazil national team player and former Sao Paulo player, said on Friday that he is bisexual, an unusual revelation in a country where a masculine culture rules football.

Through his statement in a podcast, Richardson is the first player on Brazil’s top-flight team to come out as bisexual.

The 39-year-old midfielder made two appearances in the jersey of the Brazilian national team in 2008. He was part of the So Paulo team that won the 2005 Club World Cup against Liverpool.

Also, the player won three national titles with the club. “Ricky”, as he is often nicknamed by fans, was also a member of the Atlético Mineiro team that won the Copa Libertadores in 2013.

“All my life I have been asked whether I am gay or not. I had relationships with men and I had relationships with women as well,” Richarlison said in a podcast broadcast on the Globo Esporte website. “I’m normal. I have wishes. I have dated men and women. And that?

“Many people find it important that I speak up, so I have decided to do so today. I am bisexual”.

The former football player, who worked as an analyst for TV Globo, said that he had not spoken about his sexuality at first because he believed “the world is the best place to organize this discussion and handle it naturally”. Not ready.”

The only similar public case in Brazil was that of goalkeeper Messi, a fourth-division player who played for Palmyra, a team from the city of Goyinha.

Richarlyson said that he chose his career to reveal his sexual orientation.

“I’m not saying that because I’ve stopped playing, no,” he said. “I never said it because it wasn’t my priority. Today wasn’t either, but I felt comfortable saying so. I wish it wasn’t an issue. I’m looking forward to talking about my new career as an analyst.” I would like to.”

Neither the Brazilian team nor Sao Paulo issued any comment on the player’s interview.

But the Corinthians, the cosmopolitan rival of So Paulo, celebrated Richardson’s inauguration.

“Richarlison was a great player, a great opponent on the pitch, and a great sports professional,” Corinthians said on Twitter. “Now, when she says she’s bisexual, she stands above all else and positions herself as an important voice of resistance. We have the greatest respect for her.”
