Former Italian striker Gianluca Vialli passed away at the age of 58

Former Italian striker Gianluca Vialli, who helped Sampdoria and Juventus to Serie A and European crowns before becoming player-manager of Chelsea, has died. He was 58 years old.

The Italian Soccer Federation confirmed the death on Friday.

In 2018, Vialli announced that he had overcome a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer, but in December 2021 he said that the disease had returned.

Faced with a worsening of his condition, Vialli said in mid-December that he was temporarily leaving his role as representative of the Italian team. He was named when his longtime friend and former teammate Roberto Mancini took over the reins at Azzurra.

Vialli and Mancini were known as the “goal twins” when they played together at Sampdoria and led the Genoa club to its only Serie A title in 1991 and the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1990 as well as its only European title along with four cups. Got it. Italy.

Both of them led the team to the final of the 1992 European Cup, which they lost to Barcelona at Wembley Stadium.

As a team representative, joined Violi Mancini in helping Italy win the Euros by defeating England in a penalty shootout in last year’s Wembley final.

“We have a relationship that goes beyond friendship,” said the coach during that tournament. “To me, he is a real brother.”

Vialli’s death comes just three weeks after the untimely passing of another Serie A legend, Sinisa Mihajlovic, after a long battle with leukaemia. Mihajlovic also coincided with Mancini at Sampdoria when Violi signed for Juventus.

Vialli won the Scudetto, another Italian league, and won the Champions League and UEFA Cup with the Bianconeri.

With the Italian team he played 59 games and scored 16 goals between 1985 and 1992.

He finished his playing career by combining his position on the field with that of manager at Chelsea, with whom he won the FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup. After hanging up his boots, he continued to live in London and was, among other things, a commentator.
