Former Weld County judge sentenced to life in prison after serving a friend for drug dealing

A former judge in Weld District Court was sentenced on Wednesday to one year and one day in prison for indicating to a friend that their common knowledge was the target of a 2019 federal drug investigation.

Ryan Kamada, who resigned his justice and was dismissed, pleaded guilty last year to obstruction. His sentencing hearing lasted nearly four hours on Wednesday.

Kamada was still working as a judge in 2019 when law enforcement officers approached him and asked him to sign a warrant in a drug investigation. Kamada withdrew from signing the warrant because he was familiar with the alleged drug dealer.

But Kamada then secretly called his friend and warned him to stay away from the suspected drug dealer due to the investigation. He warned his friend that the drug dealer was being watched, and even gathered information about the investigation to try to get his friend’s full attention, according to court records.

Rather than stay away from the alleged drug dealer, Kamada’s friend rather brought him to the investigation. Despite Kamada’s warning, both men were later arrested as part of the drug investigation.

Kamada sentenced to up to three years and four months in prison for the obstruction charge, although the expected sentence, given his criminal history, was between 12 and 18 months.

Kamada was also criticized for his attitude on the bench and was publicly pronounced by the Colorado Supreme Court in December, in part because he regularly sent unkind comments to his friends about what was happening in his courtroom, and even warned one friend to ‘ to conclude a divorce and tell the friend, the wife, would be a free game tomorrow night. ‘

Kamada will receive credit for the time, Judge William Martínez ruled, and will be under surveillance for two years after being released from prison.
