Free Science-Based Kids Program on Tap at VanderGrift Public Library

A free biology-themed event hosted by a teacher at Carnegie Science Center is coming to Vandergrift Public Library.

“Science in the Summer” will be offered in two seasons; From 5 to 6 p.m. for Classes 2-3 and 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. for Classes 4-6, August 9-10 at the library at 128 C Washington Ave.

Last year, the event was hosted virtually due to the pandemic.

This summer, it’s back in person, and library organizers are eager to fill all the sessions.

“It’s exciting to provide a learning program throughout the summer. Some kids become interested and excited,” said Kelsey Legge, director of children’s programming at the Vandergrift Public Library.

The two-day program this summer is short, less than four days, but Vandergrift library director Vanessa Groholsky said the library is determined and focused to play a vital role in the community by providing innovative programs.

“These programs fill an educational gap and encourage learning and exploration,” Groholsky said. “The program aims to inspire the next generation of scientists by providing opportunities for children to embody science careers, think scientifically, practice authentic techniques and of course have fun.”

Staff teachers and program presenters at Carnegie Science Center will facilitate Alley Toy classes.

“The kiddos signing up should know that we’re going to be thinking like a scientist during our time there and seeing some really cool, fun stuff. Good attitudes and Bring an open mind.”

Funding for the program is made possible by the Franklin Institute based in Philadelphia and the global biopharma company GSK.

“Any chance of exploring and making a mess, the kids are always in,” Legge said.

Children can expect to focus on different areas of biology such as paleontology, plants, wildlife and fisheries.

Legge said there are 18 openings left, and interested participants can enroll by calling the library at 724-568-2212.
