Free Tax Filing Help: Here’s What You Need to Know if You Live in California

During tax season, thousands of people stop receiving the credit for those who qualify for lack of knowledge on how to complete this important tax process.

However, free assistance with expert assistance is available in filling forms through the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs and the Tax Counseling Program for the Elderly (TCE).

People who can use these services include:

  • individuals earning $60,000 or less per year,
  • people with disabilities and
  • People with limited English proficiency.

These programs provide special assistance with people who have been recognized by the IRS for assistance.

According to information on the official website, “All VITA and TCE volunteers who prepare returns must undergo and pass training on tax law that meets or exceeds IRS standards.”

In addition, undocumented people can get help learning how to file taxes with an ITIN number and what credits they may qualify for.

And persons over the age of 60 can get special assistance “on pension matters and retirement issues” and other tax issues related to this age limit.

VITA or TCE Centers are available at various locations throughout the State of California.

IRS spokeswoman Alejandra Castro offered recommendations for the 2023 tax season.

In the San Fernando Valley, for example, California State University, Northridge has a VITA clinic that has helped thousands of people since the 1970s.

To locate the VITA center or clinic closest to your home, you can visit the California Tax Board (FTB) website.

If you want, you too can become an IRS-accredited volunteer and help others with their taxes. Visit the FTB page here to learn how to apply.
