Freeport’s Big Boss opens up about employee pay, here’s what he says

Commissioner Richard Edkerson, President of PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), referred to the salaries of his employees when he met President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). He says that the company gives a fair salary.

Initially Richard emphasized that the main focus of the company was on the safety of its employees. Because he believes that PTFI mine in Tembagapura is a very dangerous place to work.

“First we want workers to work safely. This is a very dangerous place to work, with high altitude, high rainfall and natural conditions. We focus on safety,” said Richard Tembagapura, Mimika , Papua, said in Wednesday (31/8/ 2022). ,

Along with a high-risk job, Richard also emphasized that PTFI offers a fair salary commensurate with the risk.

“We pay fair wages. We serve workers with respect,” said the man, who also served as president and CEO of Freeport McMoran.

In front of Jokowi, Richard also displayed data on PTFI employees who are almost 100% Indonesian Citizens (WNIs).

“Today you employ 30 thousand, 98% Indonesian workers and over 40% Papuans,” he said.

According to employment data from PT Freeport Indonesia as of March 2021, the company has a workforce of 27,875. This figure includes direct employees and contractors of Freeport Indonesia.

Freeport Indonesia’s direct workforce reached 6,329 people. From there, the composition is 3,576 people or 56.5% Indonesian citizens non-Papuan, 2,610 people or 41.2% Indonesian citizens Papua, while the remaining 143 people or 2.3% are foreigners.

If you add up, 97.7% of Freeport Indonesia employees who are Indonesian citizens include Papuans and non-Papuans.
