French Open Updates | Sweetek drops set, extends winning streak

PARIS ( Associated Press) – LATEST (all time local) on the French Open tennis tournament:

8:35 pm

Inga Swietec’s winning streak came to an end in 20 sets. Never mind, as his run for consecutive match wins is now up to 32.

1-ranked Swietec rocked an uncharacteristically problematic stretch and bounced back in the fourth round at Roland Garros on Monday to beat 19-year-old Zheng Qinwen of China 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-2 Of.

2020 French Open champion Sweetek took a 3-0 and 5-2 lead in the first set but could not close it after losing five set points. In the tiebreaker, Sweetek claimed five consecutive points and took a 5–2 lead – and 74th-ranked Zheng responded by trailing the next five points.

This was the first set delivered by Swietec since 23 April.

At the start of the second set, Zheng’s movement was not as good and he took a medical timeout to drop his upper right leg 3-0. Sweetek went on to win eight games in a row and took a 2-0 lead in the third set and did not let the lead slip away.

When it ended, he shouted “Come on!” and shook his right fist.

Swietec have not lost a match since February and have won five consecutive titles. No woman has won more in a row since Serena Williams’ 34-match streak ended in 2013.

Swietec’s quarterfinal opponent will be 11th seed Jessica Pegula of the United States.

7:45 pm

Andrey Rublev has reached the French Open quarter-finals for the second time in three years after his fourth-round opponent, 11th seed Jannik Sinar, stopped playing due to a problem with his left foot.

Seventh-seeded Rublev was leading 1-6, 6-4, 2-0 when Sinner retired as soon as he left the court.

Sinner’s leg was treated by a trainer during his last match and again on Monday.

Rublev has lost a set in every match he has played this year at Roland Garros on his way to his fifth career Grand Slam quarterfinal. It will be up against either defending US Open champion Daniil Medvedev or 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic.

5:55 pm

Jessica Pegula defeated Irina-Kamelia Begu 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open for the first time.

Pegula joined two other American women in the quarterfinals in Paris. Coco Gauff and Sloane Stephens will face off on Tuesday.

26-year-old Pegula is seeded 11th at Roland Garros. Her last two runs in the round of eight in a Grand Slam tournament came at the Australian Open – this January and last year.

Pegula reached Paris with a 2–3 career record in the clay-court major, including a triple-round appearance.

They needed 10 match points to win the first round and eight points in the second round last week.

Pegula, whose parents own the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and the NHL’s Buffalo Cebres, will play either No. 1 Inga Swietec or 74th-ranked Chinese teenager Zheng Qinwen in the quarterfinals.

Begu is the 31-year-old from Romania, who is ranked 63rd and fell 0-3 in the fourth round of the Majors. He was previously fined $10,000 during this French Open after he threw his racket, which jumped into the stands and brushed a child in the stands.

Begu had won in straight sets against Pegula in both his previous matches.

5:15 pm

Danish teenager Holger Rune has eliminated 2021 French Open runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach his first major quarter-final in his Roland Garros debut.

Rune, ranked 40, defeated fourth seed Tsitsipas 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Court Philippe Chatrier on Monday.

Tsitsipas is the first member of the top eight seeds to drop out of the range of males.

Rune had never won a Grand Slam match until last week, going 0-2 in previous appearances in the game’s top four events.

But the hard-hitting 19-year-old now joins sixth seed Carlos Alcaraz to make it the first Slam tournament with two teenagers in the men’s quarterfinals since Hendrik Drikmann and Andrei Medvedev at the 1994 French Open.

Rune had some trouble closing things off against Tsitsipas after leading 5-2 in the fourth set. Rune dropped nine points in a row and their lead was reduced to 5-4. He then needed to save three break points before serving up the biggest win of his career.

Roone will face No. 8 Kasper Rood of Norway for a place in the semi-finals.

3:30 pm

Casper Roode defeated Hubert Herkaz 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at Roland Garros to reach the first Grand Slam quarter-finals of his career.

Eighth seed Ruud is the first Norwegian player to reach the eighth round of the French Open.

Roode will face the winner of the fourth-round match between 2021 runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas and 19-year-old Holger Rune of Denmark.

Hurkaj, seeded 12th, was a semifinalist at last year’s Wimbledon. He lost in the first round of the French Open in three consecutive matches.

2:35 pm

Rafael Nadal didn’t get his priority on the timing of his blockbuster quarter-final match against top-ranked Novak Djokovic at the French Open.

The 13-time champion at Roland Garros wanted a one-day match on Tuesday to avoid slightly slick conditions on the clay court at night. But organizers have made the match a marquee night match, starting at 8:45 pm on Day 10, after talks with rights-holding broadcasters to ensure that all spectators in France can watch coverage of the match for free.

Nadal set a record 59th matchup against Djokovic with a five-set victory over Felix Auger-Aliassim in the fourth round on Sunday.

His overall win-loss record at Roland Garros is 109-3. Two of those three losses were against Djokovic in Paris, including last year’s semi-final.

Nadal broke the tie with Djokovic and Roger Federer in January to win the Australian Open for a record 21st men’s Grand Slam title. Djokovic missed the tournament after being relegated from Australia because he was not vaccinated against COVID-19.

Veronika Kudermatova reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Madison Keys, ending four US women’s chances of making the last eight at the French Open. time in two decades.

Keys, who reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2018 and the quarterfinals the following year, dominated the opening set but lost momentum after Kudermetova took a bathroom break before the second set.

She held on and then broke Keys’ serve to take a 2-0 lead in the second, which she completed on her seventh set point.

Kudermetova took a break after a 40–0 loss in the opening game of the third set and controlled the rest of the match, with the exception of a service break in the fourth game.

Kudermetova had not progressed past the third round in singles in any of her last 12 major tournaments. Keys was runner-up at the 2017 US Open and was coming out of the semifinals at the Australian Open.

Keys and Jessica Pegula went to the fourth round hoping to win to ensure four American women made it to the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the first time since 2002. Sloane Stephens and Coco Gauff have already advanced to the other side of the draw.

Pegula was playing Irina-Camellia Begu later on Monday.

12:40 pm

Daria Kasatkina equaled her best performance with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Camilla Giorgi in the quarterfinals of the French Open.

20th seed Kasatkina saved a break point while serving for the match and achieved it on back-to-back unforced errors from Giorgi.

She will next play Madison Keys or Veronika Kudermatova.

Kasatkina, who reached the quarter-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon in 2018, said: “I am looking forward to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, which is the most important.” “It doesn’t matter who’s on the other side of the net.”

The International Tennis Federation has honored Stan Smith with its highest honour, the Philippe Chatrier Award.

Smith won singles titles at the 1971 US Open and Wimbledon the following year, and also won five Grand Slam doubles titles and was part of seven Davis Cup winning teams for the United States.

Named after the former ITF president, the award was instituted in 1996 and recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the sport.

Off the court, Smith established his Stan Smith shoe brand in the 1970s and took on coaching roles with the USTA, working with players including Lindsay Davenport, Jennifer Capriati and Michael Chang.

“(Smith) has made a huge contribution to tennis on and off the court for more than half a century, and it is an honor to recognize his achievements,” ITF President David Haggerty said in a statement.

The award will be presented officially at the ITF World Champions Awards in Paris on Monday.

Smith, who was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987, said he was joining “a great list of people who have done a great job on the court but also off the court.”

“It’s also very special because I knew Philippe Chattier very well and he has done a lot for the game,” Smith said.

Action is underway at Roland Garros on Day 9 with Daria Kasatkina, who plays Camilla Giorgi in a fourth round match on the court Susan Lenglen.

Madison Keys is scheduled to play on the court Philippe Chatrier against number 29 Veronika Kudermatova.

Top-ranked Inga Swietec will chase a 32nd consecutive win when she takes on the role of Zheng Qinwen. Sweetek is aiming to equal the third-longest winning streak on the Women’s Tour since 2000. Venus Williams leads that list with 35 in 2000, followed by Serena Williams with 34 in 2013 and Justin Henin with 32 in 2008.
