From research project to technology giant

Google, the world’s largest search engine, was born 25 years ago as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two students at Stanford University in the USA. At the beginning in 1995 it was called “BackRub”, but then they decided to change the name to Google, inspired by the mathematical term “googol”. The goal was to organize the large amount of information on the Internet.

In these 25 years, Google has revolutionized the way we access information. What started as a simple search engine soon became an essential tool on our mobile phones. In addition to the search engine, Google offers other important services such as Gmail, YouTube and Google Maps, which are part of the empire of Alphabet, Google’s parent company.

Google is one of the most popular sites in the world with billions of daily users. It is estimated that 292 million searches are carried out every day, which is 81,000 searches per second and almost 5 million per minute.

Over the years, Google’s value has grown exponentially. When they first started trading in 2004, the shares were worth just over $3, but they currently exceed $137 and have a total value of $1.7 trillion. The strongest increase in the share price occurred from February 2021.

Despite its importance and advantages, Google does not have many employees. However, as the stock price rose, so did hiring. Google’s revenue and profits have grown steadily over the years, with last year being the most profitable in the company’s history.

Google is also a leader in the development of the Android operating system, which is used in devices such as smartphones and tablets as well as televisions and cars. It has also ventured into augmented reality with Google Glass.

As a technology giant, Google has thousands of servers and data centers around the world, allowing it to process more than a billion searches every day.
