This tournament – quite a tough one in short – has been the cradle of many Peruvian players who still shine with the national team today. Yoshimar Yotun, Luis Edvincula, Christian Cueva, Renato Tapia and Carlos Zambrano are some clear examples.

For Piero Quispe, the Peru Cup also represented his debut as a footballer., There he started making his future from the age of 14-15. In fact, many people knew that the Universitario midfielder was coached at Hector Champitaz Sports Club, but few knew that he played in this popular competition that has already been running for 55 years.

The unpublished photos published by the Facebook portal ‘La Figura’ fully confirm this. In the images, the ‘U’ midfielder is seen in his gray uniform playing in the Liga de los Olivos with Nelson Cabanilas, a winger who is still part of the Cream team today.

After that stage in ‘macho football’, Piero Quispe finished in the lower categories of Universitario in 2017. He had to struggle a lot to make it to the first cream team and he achieved this feat by hand.

In 2021, at the age of 19, the young midfielder began his professional adventure with the Merengue team under the command of ngel Comizzo. Although it was not easy at all, but gradually he made a place in the team. In fact, in his third official game – the first as a start – he celebrated his first goal last season in a 2-2 draw against Alianza Atlético de Sulana.

Despite his goal, the Merengue youth squad was no longer considered in Comizo’s team. Already with the departure of the Argentine coach and the arrival of Gregorio Pérez, Quispe received more opportunities: he played the last six games of the previous year, which were valuable to secure a place in the 2022 Copa Libertadores. In those matches, Piero Quispe was able to contribute with another goal and an assist.

In the current campaign, the commitment to the steering wheel continued. Hernán Novic’s absence due to injury has opened up an important space for the 20-year-old to show what the ‘U’ is made of. And he didn’t miss his chance.

During these months Piero Quispe has shown his full potential on the field. He has established himself as an undisputed starter in the Merengue team, even above Novick. Various coaches pass through and he continues to be one of the main figures of the squad, standing out with consistently outstanding performances.

He has played 31 matches this season out of which 29 have started. Although he is criticized for his lack of goals (he has not scored any), he always leads positively in his team’s play. In fact, he has provided four assists.
