Fully solar powerboats on their way to main water

On a windy day last week, a Maine company made history when it launched a prototype of the first fully solar-powered powerboat on Lake Waldo County.

Dan Miller, owner of Belmont Boatworks, said Wednesday of the launch of Solar Year 24 on Lake St. George in Liberty, “I am very impressed by it.” “It was really fantastic. He did everything he was supposed to do, and did it perfectly.”

The 24-foot passenger ship is the first production boat to be sold by Sustainable Energy Systems, a family company based in both Troy, New York, and Bellingham, Washington, that has pioneered work in solar-powered boats. Solar Sail 24 was designed by JF Bedard, a marine architect based in Florida, and built by Belmont Boatworks. It’s the first of at least three to be built by the Maine firm, but Miller expects many people to be interested in Solar Years.
