G-20 leaders to discuss climate change

The heads of state of the G20 of the world’s largest economies will discuss climate change on Sunday, the second day of their meeting in Rome.

On Saturday, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi welcomed heads of state, including US President Joe Biden, to the Italian capital, where they discussed issues of mutual interest, including recovery from the pandemic.

G-20 leaders supported a massive global tax deal negotiated by 136 finance ministers earlier this month, including a minimum corporate tax rate of 15% for companies with more than $ 870 million in annual revenues. It still needs to be implemented within the law of each member country.

In response to COVID-19, the G-20 Health and Finance Ministers announced the formation of a new pandemic future preparedness team proposed by the United States and Indonesia, but did not specify funding for it.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met behind the scenes with Biden and said they support Biden’s pledge to return the United States to full compliance with the Iran nuclear deal if Tehran does the same. Negotiations are scheduled for November.

This year’s meeting is the first face-to-face meeting of the G20 in two years. Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin were absent, who joined virtually, citing fears of a pandemic at home.

“Despite the G-20 decisions, not all countries that need them can have access to vaccines,” Putin said. “This is partly due to unfair competition, protectionism and because some states, especially the G-20 countries, are not ready for mutual recognition of vaccines and vaccination certificates.”

Activists marched through the streets of Rome on Saturday to protest the inaction of G-20 leaders in the fight against climate change, before leaders move on to a United Nations climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland.
