PAOLI / SUN PRAIRIE – Gary Lee Johnson, 71, from Paoli, Wisconsin, peacefully completed the wonderful life God gave him on Friday, October 8, 2021. He is the son of the late Ray and Leona (Wittwer) Johnson Paoli. He was born on November 9, 1949, in Madison at Madison General Hospital, now Meriter. He grew up in a city that has changed so much since he left that he hardly recognized him. He attended primary school in Paoli, but this building is no longer a school house. He attended high school in Belleville, Wisconsin, a school that was demolished when he was a junior. He graduated from the new Belleville High School in 1967. He left for UW-Platteville for two years and then earned his BA in Accounting from UW-Madison. His first job was at Blied Office Supply, which no longer exists. His second job was with the Sub-Zero Freezer Company, from which he retired. He then taught and taught at Madison Tech until 2004 when he officially retired.

Gary was a lifelong member of the Zwingli United Church of Christ in Paoli, Wisconsin. When he was younger, he directed a youth choir there. Throughout his life, he loved to sing songs and listen to music. He was passionate about donating blood to the American Red Cross.

He lived at Segoe Terrace Apartments for over 28 years, where he enjoyed spending time with friends, playing cards and bingo. For the last three years before his death, he lived at the San Prairie Crossroads Care Center. He especially liked his last roommate Steve. Gary and Steve were like two peas in a capsule, and they especially enjoyed watching Badger and Packers games together.

He was preceded by the deaths of his mother and father, Ray and Leona Johnson; eight aunts and uncles; several cousins; and his grandparents. Gary has a brother, Terry A. Johnson; many cousins; two nieces; and many DEAR friends including Jessica, Sue, Mary and Edie.

Gary would like to thank all the CNA, nurses, PT, OT and guardians who have looked after him over the years both in his home and in the many institutions he has lived in. He would especially like to thank his dear friend Kimberly Chan, who is MORE THAN A DEAR FRIEND (she was like a daughter to him).

The Christian burial service will take place at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 6, at PAOLI CEMETERY, 1300 County Road PB, Belleville, WI (in case of inclement weather, the service will take place at Becker Chapel). -Beal Funeral Home). Retired Minister Honorary William Helmstetter will take over.

The Becker-Beal Funeral Home in Belleville, Wisconsin is providing assistance.

In lieu of flowers, donations on behalf of Gary Johnson can be made to the American Red Cross Badgers, Agrace Hospice in Madison, UW Carbone Cancer Center, or to an organization of your choice.
