Gary Waldhorn: Wicker of Dibli star dies at 78

Wicker of Dibli star Gary Waldhorn has died at the age of 78.

The actor was best known for playing Bullish Counselor David Horton in every episode of the popular TV sitcom from 1994 to 2007.

His most recent appearance came in a Christmas special, The Wicker of Dibly in Lockdown, with star Don French, who plays the Rev. Geraldine Granger, and James Fleet, who plays his on-screen son Hugo.

His son, Josh Waldhorn, said he “died peacefully” at 6.45 a.m. on Monday.

“We will all miss him dearly,” he said.

“Classically trained, this was the theater where he really flourished and he left a legacy of entertainment that saw him frequent Broadway’s boards, the West End, and in our living rooms.

“He leaves behind his two grandchildren, Cooper and Bailey, and their son Josh.”

Fellow actor Samuel West paid tribute to Waldhorn on Twitter, calling him a “lovely man and a wonderful actor.”

He posted a photo of himself, his father Timothy West and Waldhorn, with the words: “Sad news about Gary Waldhorn. He played my father, the eponymous king, in both parts of Henry IV at the Old Vic in 1997 (Here with me as the real dad, the ultimate non-dad, Falstaff. A lovely man and a fantastic actor. RIP.”

Waldhorn appeared in classic British TV shows including The Sweeney, Brush Strokes and Hotel Babylon, and even appeared in the comedy sketch show French and Saunders.

He was an accomplished Shakespearean actor and performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in productions such as Much Ado About Nothing.

Waldhorn also played Max in Vivian Stanshall’s cult film Sir Henry at Rawlinson’s End with BAFTA winner Trevor Howard, and provided voiceover in commercials for Green Flag, Quick Fit, Branston and Marmite.

“Our condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
