Gauri delivers exceptional performance in Nice’s 2-0 win at Metz

PARIS ( Associated Press) — Amin Gouri scored with a Panenca penalty kick and provided an assist on Sunday as Nice moved back into second place in the French league standings with a 2-0 win at Metz.

The result extended Nice’s winning run to five league matches and put the team within eight points of leader Paris Saint-Germain. Nice have a two-point lead over third-place Marseille, who won 2-0 at Lens on Saturday.

PSG later hosted Reims at the Parc des Princes.

The 21-year-old opened the match in place of striker Andy Delorte – who was ruled out shortly before kickoff due to illness – and delivered an outstanding performance.

Metz’s goalkeeper Marc-réale Callard kept the hosts on hold in the first half as Gouri tested him several times. The French forward eventually found a breakthrough in the 58th minute with a clever lofted ball in defense from Kheifren Thuram, which broke DeLock from close range.

The France U21 international, Gauri, thought he had doubled Nice’s lead in the 76th, but his attempt with an assist from Ivan Gesend was dismissed for offside.

Nice was awarded a soft penalty with five minutes remaining after minor contact between Gesand and Vincent Pajot. Gauri tried an audacious chipped kick for his 10th goal of the season and defeated Callard, although the goalkeeper caught the ball but could not stop it from crossing the line.

Gauri joins Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe as the only player under the age of 23 to score at least 10 goals and 5 or more assists in one of Europe’s top five leagues this season.

Metz finished 17th, just one point above the relegation zone.
