GB authorizes updated version of Moderna’s Covid vaccine

LONDON ( Associated Press) – British drug regulators have become the first in the world to authorize an updated version of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine that aims to protect against the original virus and the Omicron variant.

The Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency said in a statement on Monday that it has given the green light to Moderna’s “bivalent” combination vaccine, which will be used as a booster for adults.

Each dose of the booster vaccine will target both the original COVID-19 virus discovered in 2020 and the Omicron BA.1 variant discovered in November 2021. British regulators said the side effects were similar to those seen with Moderna’s original reinforcement and that they were generally “mild and self-resolving.”

“This (combination) vaccine gives us a rapid tool in our arsenal to help protect us from this disease,” said Dr. June Rhine, director of the regulatory agency.

This approach is used with flu vaccines, which are adjusted each year based on circulating variants and can protect against four types of influenza.

Moderna Chief Executive Officer Stephane Bancel said in a statement that this was the first regulatory approval for a vaccine aimed at fighting the Omicron variant, predicting that the boosters would play an “important role” in protecting people against COVID-19. Will be in winter.

UK health officials have not yet decided whether the modified vaccine will be used in their autumn strategy. In July, the government said everyone over the age of 50 would get a COVID booster in the fall.

On Friday, Germany’s health minister said a modified COVID-19 booster could be approved by the European Medicines Agency as early as next month.

In June, the US drug regulator told manufacturers that any booster shots for fall would need to include protection against the latest Omicron variant.

According to the World Health Organization, the latest global surge in COVID-19 is driven by the BA.5 omicron subvariant, which accounts for about 70% of reported cases.
