Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush announced his candidacy for the Texas Attorney General on June 2 and challenged Republican Ken Paxton.
Paxton has held the post since 2015 and will be re-elected in 2022.
Bush is the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) and the cousin of former President George W. Bush.
Bush made the announcement during an event at a bar in Austin, Texas. He cites the Conservative agenda he implemented at the Texas General Land Office and accuses Paxton’s office of corruption.
‘But we have our own problems in Austin. “We have a web of corruption and lies that is affecting one of the highest offices in our country, and it is time for a change,” Bush said. “We have a scandal that plagues one of our top officials, and I believe conservatives should have a choice in the Republican election.”
Bush apparently referred to an anonymous source report by The Associated Press published last year, in which it is alleged that Paxton is being investigated by the FBI. Paxton’s office declined to comment on the report at the time.
The two candidates are fighting for the approval of former President Donald Trump. Bush is the only family member who supported Trump and mentioned the former president by name in the speech announcing his candidacy and debut. campaign video. Meanwhile, Paxton has filed a lawsuit challenging the outcome of the 2020 election in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin. The Supreme Court did not want to hear the case.
Trump’s endorsement will be the most important in the primary race. The former president has said he likes both candidates and will announce his preference soon.
“I like both of them a lot. “I will address my approval and recommendation to the great people of Texas in the not-too-distant future,” Trump said in a statement.
Bush recently wrote on Twitter that he spoke to Trump.
“It’s great to talk to President Trump to discuss the future of Texas and how we continue the fight to put America first. I appreciate the words of encouragement and support. Great things are coming soon! “Bush wrote on May 24th.
