Bogota, 16 December. Georgian Lasha Talkhadze confirmed his prowess by winning three golds at the Weightlifting World Cup in Colombia, which brought down the curtain on the qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games with China this Friday in Bogota.
Talkhadze was the best of the 10 competitors competing at +109 kg, a division he dominated with 215 kg in the snatch, 251 in the clean and jerk, and an Olympic total of 466.
The Georgian was the hot favorite in the category and he was not out of place and incidentally, confirmed his impressive record which includes two gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and Tokyo 2020.
In addition, Talkhadze has been the European champion for the past six years without interruption.
In the Olympic total of the competition, held in Bogotá, silver went to Gore Minasyan from Bahrain, who lifted 462 kg, and bronze went to Armenian Varzdat Lalayan with 461.
On the other hand, the general medal tally was dominated by China, which won 19 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze. Thailand is second with 5 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze.
Colombia took a creditable third place with 3 gold (two from Yeni Fernanda Álvarez and one from Francisco Mosquera), 5 silver and 16 bronze.
Indonesia, Georgia, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Egypt and Norway each won 3 gold records.
Venezuela took 12th place in the medal table thanks to two gold medals from Kidomar Valenilla.
At the World Cup she also picked up Mexican Ana Gabriela López, who took the silver medal in the snatch and the bronze medal in the Olympic total in the 55 category, while Ecuadorian Angie Palacios won the bronze medal in the Olympic total and the silver medal in the snatch.
The Ecuadorian delegation also took bronze with Nancy Paredes in the snatch and Tamara Yazaira Salazar in the Olympic total.
The World Cup saw 550 athletes from 93 nations in action and was the first qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
