German, Czech police search for missing girl in Bavaria

BERLIN (NWN) – Hundreds of police officers searched for a missing 8-year-old girl Tuesday in a wooded area along the German-Czech border in Bavaria.

The girl, identified only by her first name Julia, went missing on Sunday along with her brother and nephew as the family took a break from hiking in the Bohemian Forest.

While two boys, aged 6 and 9, were located in the woods near the Bavarian town of Waldmünchen on Sunday evening, the girl remained missing.

The German news agency DPA reported that around 800 German and Czech police officers, firefighters, 40 tracking dogs, helicopters and drones were involved in the search.

Temperatures are close to freezing in the area, and officials are concerned that the girl may not be able to survive the cold for long. They assume that she is lost in the forest and do not think that she was the victim of a crime.

“The girl’s chances of survival are getting smaller every hour,” police spokesman Josef Weindel told the German daily Passaur Neu Presse.

“Without food and drink, a child can survive for more than two days,” he said, adding that cold weather was the main problem.

The DPA said that the girl and her family are residents of Berlin.

He said the Bohemian forest is believed to be so impenetrable that officials told potential volunteers not to engage in the search because otherwise more people could go missing.

“This is a difficult area,” said Czech police spokesman Dana Ladmanova, according to the DPA.
