German Government Calls For COVID-19 Vaccination For All As Cases Rise

German Health Minister Jens Spahn called on Friday for booster shots against COVID-19 for anyone fully vaccinated at least six months ago as the country faces a fourth wave of coronavirus infections.

Speaking to reporters after a two-day summit in Bavaria with health ministers from 16 German states, Spahn said the COVID-19 situation in Germany is entering a very difficult period as the country’s Robert Koch Institute reported a record 37,120 new daily cases on Friday.

Spahn said that the “fourth wave” is not only here, but it is “here for a long time”, gaining strength, “and is clearly accelerating.”

German Health Minister Jens Spahn speaks at a press conference following the meeting of German health ministers in Lindau, Germany, 5 November 2021.

The minister said some German government leaders have warned that the country may need a new quarantine unless urgent action is taken.

Hans Kluge, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe, said Thursday that the sharp rise in Germany is part of a surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths in Europe that have made the region the new epicenter of the pandemic.

At a regular COVID-19 briefing at the agency’s headquarters in Geneva, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and other experts discussed the spike in the disease in Europe, where the number of cases has increased by 55% over the past four weeks, despite the availability of sufficient vaccines.

“Let me be clear: this should not be happening. We have all the tools to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 and save lives, and we continue to urge all countries to use these tools, ”Tedros said.

The head of WHO also condemned the fact that the world’s low-income countries received only 0.4% of the world’s vaccines. He said these countries rely almost entirely on vaccines distributed through the global COVAX vaccine cooperative operated by WHO.

Tedros said vaccines should no longer reach countries that vaccinated more than 40% of their population, and boosters should no longer be administered, except in immunocompromised patients, until COVAX receives the vaccines needed to vaccinate 40 low-income countries. % level.

In addition, in the United States, the Biden administration says it has severed ties with an American company that the Trump administration made a $ 628 million deal to produce vaccines against COVID-19.

Earlier this year, Emergent BioSolutions was found to have infected 15 million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine with ingredients intended for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Later, the FDA threw away at least 60 million more Johnson & Johnson injections from the Baltimore plant.

The Biden administration said Thursday that Americans who work for companies with at least 100 employees must be fully vaccinated by January 4 or undergo weekly COVID-19 testing. The new rule affects about 84 million workers, but it is not immediately clear how many of these workers are not vaccinated.

WHO has warned of fake AstraZeneca vaccines in Iran. The WHO said “products are hard to find” are “illegally filled vials of used and discarded genuine COVID-19 AstraZeneca vaccine” that pose a risk of “illegal or accidental inclusion in a regulated supply chain or approved immunization program”.

The Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center said early Friday that it has recorded 248.7 million cases of COVID-19 worldwide and more than 5 million deaths. The center reported that 7.1 billion doses of the vaccine have been administered.
