BERLIN ( Associated Press) — A German court on Wednesday sentenced a woman to life in prison for posing as a doctor and causing the deaths of several patients.
According to judges at the Kassel regional court, evidence shows that the 51-year-old woman, whose name was withheld under German law, used a forged credential to gain employment as an anesthesiologist.
Judges found that three patients died due to treatment errors and others suffered serious disorders, the German news agency dpa reported. The woman was found guilty of three murders and 10 attempted murders.
The judges said the seriousness of the crimes could make it difficult for the woman to be released after 15 years, the amount of time people sentenced to life must serve in prison before they can apply for it.
Prosecutors accused the woman of giving wrong doses of anesthetics and failing to treat blood poisoning at a hospital in Fritzlar, near Kassel. She was said to have been responsible for prolonged oxygen deprivation and damage to the cardiovascular system and organ failure in several patients, dpa reported.
The woman suffered from an excessive need for recognition, according to prosecutors.
After working at the Fritzlar hospital from 2015 to 2018, the woman moved to a clinic in northern Germany. Officials from a regional medical college reported discrepancies in her files, and she eventually turned herself in for employment fraud. The Hessian Medical College and her former employer also denounced her.
