Germany will supply about 40 armored vehicles to Ukraine

BERLIN ( Associated Press) – Germany announced Friday that it will supply Ukraine with about 40 Marder armored personnel carriers in the first months of the year. The plan marks another notable change in arms deliveries from Germany to Ukraine, following a phone call on Thursday between Foreign Minister Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden. Germany then announced its intention to send Murders.

“These 40 vehicles should be ready in the first quarter so that they can be delivered to Ukraine,” Scholz spokesman Stephan Habestreit told reporters in Berlin. Hebestreit said Germany plans to train Ukrainian forces in the use of the vehicles, a process that will take about eight weeks.

Germany has already provided significant military aid to Ukraine, including howitzers, Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns and an IRIS-T surface-to-air missile system, with three more to follow this year.

Scholz has long warned of pressure to supply Marders and other heavy Western-built vehicles such as tanks, insisting that Germany alone would not make such deliveries, but this week France, the United States and Germany Announced plans to send comparable armored vehicles, which fall short. Tanks are considered.

Last year, Germany backed a series of deals in which NATO’s eastern allies sent equipment familiar to Ukraine from the Soviet era. In return, Germany supplied those countries with more modern equipment made in the West.

Habestreit said that since mid-December there have been discussions with the United States and other countries about how to support Ukraine in the future. He added that the prospect of supplies of Soviet-made equipment is “slowly running out” at a time when the situation in Ukraine is changing, with large-scale Russian attacks on infrastructure. Fighting may escalate as winter passes.
