Gervonta Davis defends his Scepter against Dominic Garcia

WASHINGTON ( Associated Press) – Gervonta Davis defended his World Boxing Association lightweight world championship on Saturday, defeating Dominican Hector Luis Garcia by technical knockout after eight rounds.

Davis got off to a slow start before improving to 28–0 with 26 knockouts and handed Garcia his first professional loss in 17 fights. Garcia kept pace with Davis in the early rounds, but did not come out at the bell of the ninth because he had lost sight in his right eye.

“A little surprised, but when I hit him, I knew he was hurt, really hurt,” Davis said. “He’s a fighter, so I didn’t want to show it. But I knew he was hurt.”

The Baltimore native is set to face Ryan Garcia in April in one of the most anticipated bouts of the year. “Enough talk,” Garcia tweeted. “Let’s kill it.”

“I’ll be ready,” Davis declared. “I’m ready to fight. He’s training, he’s talking, we’ll see”.

But first, “Tank” Davis had to get through second Garcia, who said he has earned his shot with 2022.

Some 19,731 attendees waited until well before 1 a.m. for the start of the stellar event. Davis and Garcia waited a while to get into a rhythm after a few study rounds, throwing very few punches. Davis started to break loose in the fourth round with a series of punches that got the fans on their feet.

“I was trying to beat him mentally,” Davis said. “He tried to deceive her with his hands and with his eyes. He’s a talented fighter, so I had to throw the hook at him.”

A brawl at ringside forced the referee to stop the bout midway through the eighth round after the rioting fighters were distracted. The fight resumed after only a minute and Davis shone until the bell, landing enough punches for the win.

It was the first major showdown at the Capital One Arena since Mike Tyson’s last fight in 2005 against Kevin McBride. It was in danger of being suspended after Davis was arrested and charged with domestic violence in late December, until the woman who called the police released a statement on social media, saying Davis ” Don’t hurt me.” Neither me nor our daughter.

Davis said that he was not concerned that the fight did not happen, adding that he just wanted to clear his name.
