Ghislaine Maxwell placed on suicide watch, but not suicide: lawyer

Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted former accomplice of child sex predator Jeffrey Epstein, was placed on suicide watch this week before her sentencing, but she is not suicidal, her lawyer said in court documents filed Saturday.

The 60-year-old former British social worker was “suddenly” placed on suicide watch at a New York detention center on Friday without a “psychological evaluation and without justification,” her lawyer, Bobbi Sternheim, wrote to a federal court in New York . Saturday.

“She’s not suicidal,” he said, adding that he had met her in person earlier that morning at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

“She got a ‘suicide throat’ and is given a few sheets of toilet paper on request. This morning, a psychologist, Ms. “Maxwell evaluated and determined she was not suicidal,” he added.

Should her conditions not change, and would she be deprived of sleep and not have enough time to meet with her defense team, Sternheim said he would request that her trial be postponed.

A representative at the Federal Bureau of Prisons did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday on Sternheim’s suicide guard claim.

Her lawyers wrote to the sentencing judge earlier this month in an attempt to indulge. They portrayed her as a scapegoat for Epstein’s crimes after his death and described her as a difficult childhood in the hands of a cruel and presumptuous father and an absent mother. They included letters from family and friends vouching for her character.

“Mrs. “Maxwell has already had a difficult time during detention under conditions that are far more difficult and punishable than those experienced by a typical pre-trial detainee, and she is preparing to spend significantly more time behind bars,” her lawyers said. “Her life was ruined. Since Epstein’s death, her life has been threatened and death threats continue while she is in jail. “It would be a travesty of justice for her to face a sentence that would have been appropriate for Epstein,” her lawyers said.
