EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ( Associated Press) – The New York Giants are gearing up for a different Jalen Hurts this time around.
The Giants expect the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback to make a full recovery. And that means preparing to face one of the most dynamic players in the NFL, a dual threat with his passing and rushing.
“Everyone is saying he’s having an MVP season and I agree,” Giants defensive coordinator Vink Martindale said Wednesday. “Because he can beat you with your feet, he can beat you as a traditional quarterback and he can beat you with guts.
“He can beat you in a lot of different ways, and that’s the big challenge, because there are very few quarterbacks who can do it like that.”
Hurts took full part in Eagles’ practice and didn’t even appear on Wednesday’s injury report, a clear indication that he has recovered from a right shoulder sprain suffered early last month in Chicago.
“He’s out on the injury report now, so I’m looking forward to MVP candidate Jalen Hurts,” Martindale said. “I think you’re kidding yourself if you expect anything less, because the guy definitely is a competitor.”
Hurts missed two games before returning for the regular season finale against the Giants, making most of his starts in the Eagles’ 22–16 victory. The Pro Bowl quarterback completed 20 of 35 passes for 229 yards and one interception and rushed nine times for just 13 yards in a playoff warm-up game not looking 100% healthy.
On Saturday night, when the teams meet again in the NFC Divisional Round in Philadelphia, New York can expect to see a healthier and more dangerous Hurts.
Safety Julian Love said, “Playing against him is a challenge.” “He is playing at a very high level this year because of his arm, his feet. He has raised the level of his game and we have to try and play him to the best of his ability. There are many weapons at your disposal. It represents a danger and a problem for those who have encountered it this year.
And the veterans already know this. In their first meeting in Week 14, Hurts completed 21 of 31 passes for 217 yards with two scores and rushed seven times for 77 yards and a touchdown.
