October 4 (WNN) — The San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers needed all 162 regular season games to decide the winner of the National League West. The Giants claimed the title in their final with a win over the San Diego Padres.
Logan Webb allowed six hits and four runs in seven innings and hit a two-run home run to lead the Giants to an 11-4 win on Sunday in San Francisco.
“It felt like we had to win every game for the last month, and we were pretty close to doing that,” Giants catcher Buster Posey told reporters.
“It was a grind. When you think about winning 107 games, you think you’ve got to rest the last 10 days, at least, of the season. It makes it all the more special to come down to the last day and To play like we did on this last day.”
The Giants (107–55) secured the No. 1 playoff seed in the National League with the win. The Dodgers (106-56) defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in Los Angeles on Sunday, but finished second in the division and claimed a spot in the wild card game.
They will face the St. Louis Cardinals in the elimination game on Wednesday. The winner faces the Giants in the National League Division Series.
The Giants’ victory on Sunday ended the Dodgers’ streak of eight consecutive National League West Division titles. The Giants, who finished third in the division last season, claimed the crown for the first time since 2012.
Webb took an 11-1 lead in the eighth inning on Sunday in San Francisco. He left the game after allowing three consecutive singles to go out of the frame. He allowed an RBI single on his last exchange. Relief pitcher Kevin Castro allowed another RBI single in the next at-bat.
The Giants’ bullpen allowed just one hit in two shutout innings to secure a division-cleaning victory. Webb made 2 for 3 with two RBIs, three runs, a walk and a strike out.
Giants first baseman Wilmer Flores and catcher Buster Posey hit two hits each. Posey also scored three runs and walked.
Padres starter Reece Nehar conceded three hits and two runs in three innings. Center fielder Trent Grisham made 2 for 4 with an RBI and one run in the loss. All-Star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr scored 0 for 3 with two strikes.
The Giants host the Dodgers or Cardinals in Game 1 of the NLDS in San Francisco on Friday. The Dodgers host the Cardinals in an NL Wild Card game at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday night at 8:10 p.m. EDT. That game airs on TBS.
